Although same-sex marriage was first legalized in 2001 (Netherlands), 162 countries still criminalize homosexuality, with penalties that sometimes include death.
This Is No Joke is a viral social movement advocating for the global legalization of same-sex marriage. Based in Brussels, the heart of Europe and home to the European Parliament and over 200 embassies and consulates, the project takes direct action to raise awareness.
It starts by sending same-sex marriage invitations to embassies of countries where such marriages remain illegal, followed by symbolic weddings held in front of those embassies. The second phase of the project uses infographics and social media posts to spotlight the current state of same-sex marriage laws, encouraging broader public involvement.
